10/18/26 7:15PM UPDATE: I feel compelled to share a completely different experience I had at this location just now, an experience that I feel was not only unprofessional, but frankly, unbelievable. I called the restaurant to place a simple order for 2 Pumpkin Spice Milkshakes, and the Voice Prompted AI Order Taker said they weren't available at this location. I'm a late night regular, and I was told long ago by wait staff at this exact restaurant the corporate order takers and AI had a tendency to misquote the availability of items, and it was suggested anytime I had a modified order or wanted something from the seasonal menu to call and ask for the store directly. So, that's what I've always done, and I knew they offered the seasonal shakes, because I just went through this EXACT SAME THING last night, only with pleasant results. This time, a female server answered the phone. I told her hello and asked to place a to-go order. "You can go online and do that," she replied. I told her I was aware of that, and I had tried first to place the order through their phone system, but it said the item wasn't available, and before I could even tell her what it was I wanted to order, she cut me off, "Well, if they say we don't offer it, then we don't offer it." I began to politely explain that I knew they offered it, because I had ordered it there several times in the past couple days. She proceeded to tell me, "If you can't order it online, we don't have it here." I was on my way to the gas station around the corner from the restaurant and was so irritated by the poor customer service, I couldn't wait to get gas. I immediately pulled the car over and told her I'm around the corner. I'll just walk over and show you on your menu that you offer the pumpkin spice milkshake." 3 minutes later, I walked in the front door, grabbed a menu and pointed it out to her. I said it looks to me like you offer it here on the menu. She replied snidely, "They said it wasn't available because we're out of ice cream! That's how it works! If we're out of something, it won't let you order it!" "Really? So, you're telling me this restaurant has no ice cream? On a Sunday evening when many families dine out and milkshakes are featured all over your regular menu and seasonal inserts?" "Yep. We have no ice cream." As a former corporate restaurant exec and restaurateur, I can assure you this employee would have been dismissed immediately. I can 100% GUARANTEE the IHOP training manual not only has a section about serving customers with a smile, but also about being helpful and having a will-do attitude. And every restaurant in the world teaches their wait staff to offer alternative options if the customer's preferred choice isn't available. I don't in any way feel I am entitled to any special treatment whatsoever, but in all honesty, any other server who has ever waited on me would likely have sent the busser to Safeway to get some ice cream. Not that I ever would have expected it or asked! I just spend that much money at this restaurant, and I'm likely one of their better tippers. (Knowing shakes are a pain in the ass to make, I would have tipped her $20 as I usually do.) So, do I believe they were completely out of ice cream? Not for a second. Not on a Sunday family night at IHOP. And if IHOP was indeed entirely out of ice cream, then this server was set up for failure by her Rest. Mgr. and their corporate office needs to step in. Judging by her attitude, the way she sounded irritated having to answer the phone, and the way she abruptly cut me and kept repeating, if you can't order it online, we don't have it," followed by her lack of suggesting an alternative dessert truly led me to believe she just didn't care to take my order and was outright lying about being out of ice cream. So, on my way out, instead of calling, I went online since she kept bringing it up. I found the pumpkin milkshakes, and lo and behold, they order went through! Of course, she still kept to her story and claimed she was unable to make them or anything else containing ice cream.
